The Elliott Bay Seawall Project design team included artists Haddad|Drugan, who were charged with translating Waterfront Seattle’s vision for art into a plan considering goals and conditions specific to the Seawall Project. The plan analyzes the seawall site and its opportunities and constraints for art integration, offers a conceptual framework, and outlines themes, locations, and types of art.
The new seawall will meet current design standards while restoring marine habitat. The philosophical framework of the art plan includes articulating and illuminating the edge where land meets sea and conceiving of art as an exchange spatially between the human and marine worlds and temporally between past, present, and future conditions. The principal commissions are envisioned as experimental engagements with site systems around four themes key to the Seawall Project: habitat, light, utility, and sound.
