400 S. Viaduct, Salt Lake City, UT, 2026
Extending nearly 2,000 feet along the 400 South Viaduct Trail, Strut is the single longest continuous artwork in Utah to date. The installation connects the Westside’s Poplar Grove neighborhood to downtown Salt Lake City through an artist-designed fence and concrete barrier elements, integrating color, pattern, and form into the structure itself.
The stacked and staggered fence panels form an undulating rhythm inspired by the Wasatch Mountains and the flowing Jordan River. The vivid color palette, created with strips of retro-reflective sign film and solid polycarbonate panels, is inspired by colors of the surrounding landscape, the Great Salt Lake, mountainous aspen groves, and a flock of wild peacocks living on the Westside. The art strives to represent and embolden the most vibrant qualities of the community and place.
Developed through community engagement and close collaboration with the project’s engineering team, Strut transforms a transportation corridor into a shared civic space. The work is like a thread of color weaving through the site, stitching together the two sides of the viaduct.
This project was made possible through the Salt Lake City Arts Council’s Public Art Program, with support from the Salt Lake Art Design Board, Salt Lake City Transportation and Engineering, Metal Arts Foundry, and residents of the Poplar Grove neighborhood.
